October Horrorfest - October 3rd
Return of the Vampire (1944)
When Columbia intended to make a as direct sequel to Universal’s Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi, Universal weren’t too keen on the idea and threatened to sue Columbia changed all character names to avoid any connections to Dracula and released the movie anyway, as a result Return of the Vampire comes off as a knock off of Universal’s horror flicks, because well, it is.
Even for a knock off it’s still pretty good it’s got Lugosi as a vampire, a werewolf, and even fucking Nazis!
this was the last time Lugosi got top billing in a major hollywood movie and even though his character’s name is Armand Tesla, it’s really Dracula, every thing about him from the way Lugosi acts down to the costume is Dracula and you can tell Lugosi fucking LOVES playing the role again, he’s the best part of the whole movie.
the Werewolf doesn’t really do much either other than bitch about being a werewolf when he’s in human form, and do Lugosi’s bidding when he’s a wolf, He’s actually almost the same as the Renfield character from Dracula, in the sense that his Lugosi’s bitch.
Cheap knock off or not, I loved it.
